Citizenship Ceremonies

What is a Citizenship Ceremony?

Becoming a British Citizen is a major event in someone's life. The final part of this process is a celebratory ceremony. Successful applicants are awarded Citizenship after making the Oath of Allegiance. This Oath is taken during the ceremony. New citizens receive their certificate of naturalisation at the end of the ceremony.

Booking your Citizenship Ceremony

Guidance on how to book your ceremony will be included in your Home Office invitation letter. You must attend a Citizenship Ceremony within 11 weeks of receiving your invitation.

Please do not contact the register office until you have received your citizenship invitation.

Private Citizenship Ceremonies

If you have received confirmation of your British Nationality, Congratulations! We look forward to celebrating this wonderful occasion with you.

A Private Citizenship Ceremony is the perfect way to complete your journey to becoming a British Citizen. Allowing you to celebrate where and when you want.

  • Choose where to celebrate*. At one of our four Register Offices, with ceremony rooms that can accommodate 2 to 80 guests. Or at a location of your choice in East Sussex
  • Include the whole family
  • Children are welcome to attend, whether as a new citizen or as a guest

*Private Citizenship Ceremonies cannot be conducted in private homes or religious premises.

Attendance at Citizenship Ceremonies is by Home Office invitation only. You must bring your invitation on the day of the ceremony along with the letter from the Home Office and photographic I.D.

Ceremony Fees

  • Monday to Friday at any East Sussex Register Office (between 9am - 5pm) £100
  • Any time, Any Place, Anywhere* £350

*Private Citizenship Ceremonies cannot be conducted in private homes or religious premises.

Group Citizenship Ceremonies

Group Citizenship Ceremonies are held at one of our Register Offices on a set date each month. You are welcome to bring a maximum of two guests. Children under 12 are not permitted at Group Citizenship Ceremonies. Attending a Group Citizenship Ceremony is free of charge.  

Ceremony format

  • Formal introduction and welcome from the Deputy Superintendent Registrar
  • Local dignitary speech
  • Swearing or Affirmation of Oath
  • Pledge of Allegiance
  • Presentation of certificate
