Re-registration of children

Any child born in England and Wales whose natural parents have married or entered into a civil partnership since they were born, must have their birth re-registered.

This a legal requirement that creates a new birth record for your child. There is no time limit on when this must be completed.

There is no charge for re-registration but the statutory certificate fee will be charged for any certificate(s) issued.

You must complete form LA1 and bring this with you to your re-registration appointment.

To book a re-registration appointment at an East Sussex Register Office contact us on 0345 60 80 198.

For children born outside England and Wales, authorities of that country should be contacted to check whether re-registration is required.

Re-registration following the marriage or civil partnership of two female parents contact the General Register Office on 0300 123 1837.
