Any child born in England and Wales whose natural parents have married since they were born, must have their birth re-registered.
Re-registration is a legal requirement that will create a new birth record, showing them as a child of your marriage.
There is no charge for the re-registration but the statutory certicate fee will be charged for any certificate(s) issued.
Re-registration is done by appointment at a Register Office in the district where the child was born. If you are unable to attend the relevant Register Office contact us 0345 60 80 198.
If your child was born outside of England and Wales then you should contact the authorities of that country to check whether re-registration is required.
For re-registration of a child following the marriage of the child’s two female parents please contact the General Register Office on 0300 123 1837.
